What is a Facebook Profile?

Facebook is known for being the biggest social networking site. In this technology age, almost everyone has a Facebook Profile. If you say that you're not on Facebook, it’s like saying that you’re not from Earth because everyone does!

Are you on Facebook? If you're not and thinking of signing up, here are the easy steps to get started.

Signing up- Log on to http://www.facebook.com

Basic Information- Fill out the sign up form that asks for your first name, last name, email address, password, gender and birth date. Verify all the info you've just input and click on the green "Sign Up" button.

Spam Check-Type in the captcha when prompted then proceed to the next step by clicking the green "Sign Up" button again.

Step 1: Find Friends-You will come across this page and it’s actually a good option that you can use. Enter your email address in order for you to quickly find your friends who are already on Facebook by searching through your email address. You have the choice to skip this step if you wish to.

Profile Information- The next step will be filling out your profile info. Again, you can click on "skip" if you don't feel comfortable sharing your information online or if you’ve filled it out, click on "Save & Continue" to get to the next step.

People you may know- Facebook will suggest people that you may know based on the profile information that you’ve shared and you can add them as your friend. This is another optional feature, so click on skip if you want to add friends at a later time.

Your profile picture- The last step on creating your account will be setting your profile picture. You can either upload a photo from your computer or take a photo with your webcam. Click on "Save and Continue" to finish the registration process.

And there you have it, welcome to Facebook! You've successfully created your Facebook Profile which is a good tool to stay in touch with your family, friends, relatives and colleagues from every part of the world.

Now that you’re all set up, let us discuss about some of the basic features of a Facebook Profile for you to maximize its use.

Wall- A wall is a section within a user’s profile where friends can post messages, links and photos. By default, walls are visible to the friends of the user.

News Feed- Your news feed basically allows you to see what’s going on, your friends’ recent status updates, their recent uploaded photos, the links they shared online and the pages that they “Liked”.

Status updates- This is feature that lets you say what’s on your mind and all your friends can read it from their news feed.

Facebook Chat- Facebook chat is located on the bottom right part of your Facebook page and it’s a good way to have a live conversation with your friends who are currently online on Facebook.

Like- You can click on the “Like” button to like the status updates, photos, comments and links that you can find in your news feed or on your friends’ wall. This is a way of giving a positive feedback on the information that your friends share online.

Messages and Inbox- This feature allows you and your friends to send private messages to each other. The difference between the Facebook chat and your inbox is that the Facebook chat requires you both to be online at the same time.

Groups- Groups are usually formed to gather a group of people for a discussion. It is commonly used by friends, colleagues, small businesses or even relatives. You can post on the wall of the group and everyone in the group will see it and interact if they want to.

Notifications- You receive notifications because of the following: somebody posted on your wall, photos, links and when somebody commented on your previous activity.
