The world was saddened by very bad news on October 5th 2011, a day after the launch of the new iPhone 4s, when Apple made an announcement about the death of its co-founder, chairman, and chief executive officer, Steve Jobs. It didn't take much time for Jobs' death to make an impact on social media and to be a trending topic on Twitter. Twitter was flooded by a large volume of tweets because everyone was tweeting about their heavy hearts after having learned that the visionary and creative genius has passed away.  #ThankYouSteve, #iSad and #SteveJobs were the most commonly used hashtags.

Just in case you’ve missed it, here are the top 10 most quoted tweets about Job’s death.

While everyone on Twitter was expressing their condolences to Jobs’ family and friends, Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg paid tribute by posting a status update on his Facebook profile, “Steve, thank you for being a mentor and a friend. Thanks for showing that what you build can change the world. I will miss you.”. The post has already been liked over 380,000 times by Zuck’s subscribers.

In less than 5 hours after Apple's announcement, 1.4 million tweets had been sent with Jobs' name in them. Though the event failed to break the “number of tweets per second”, the heavy volume was enough for Twitter to seize up and display its popular “fail whale” that indicates over capacity.
