Is social media for advertising?
It’s undeniable that our lives changed when social media was born. Think about the old days! How did we keep in touch with friends? Write letters? Send cards? Call to see how they were doing? But…….
What is social media? Social media is a type of online media that expedites conversation as opposed to traditional media. It’s about open conversation and influencing via one-on-one conversations.
Another question, is social media a platform for advertising or for social networking? If social media is a platform for advertising, is it really an effective platform for advertising your brands or products?
Most people think social media falls under the domain of public relations. Social media creates a platform for open conversation and because of that, it creates advertising opportunities for companies. The average time we spend on Facebook, Twitter, Weibo or other platforms and the growing usage/population on social media enable advertisers to promote their latest offers or to increase brand awareness in a significantly reduced time frame than traditional advertising.
Advertisers can get responses to their promotional messages in a very short amount of time or even instantly. When you can get someone to talk about your products or your brand’s latest offer, this effectively fulfills the purpose of advertising. Word of mouth is the most effective way of advertising.
Social media should falls under the domain of both, public relations and advertising. Social media creates conversation, and advertisers want to create buzz for their products and brands. Thus, integrating social media becomes part of the tactics of advertising and public relations.
