| It is the latest digital fad, the most common buzz word at marketing conferences, what every CEO has at some point asked his/her CMO about. If you’re reading this, you probably have a general sense of what it is, but it may be useful for us to share with you our working definition of the term “social media marketing” as it’s what guides the projects we work on. Definition of SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING: form of marketing in which brands engage audiences on social networking websites or via specifically created campaigns intended to be shared digitally, where the engagement can be active (brand/offer related), passive (industry/topic related) or neutral. Too many companies believe social media marketing boils down to launching a Facebook page or Twitter account and then expecting to some day login to 10,000 fans/followers.Others are only slightly more enlightened and commit to buying a few ads and posting a few updates but wonder at why their brands haven’t gone viral. What we have found is that the effective social media marketing happens when a brand starts from an understanding first of the nature of the audience they are trying to reach and an honest assessment of the awareness and loyalty of the target audience to the brand. From there, the most important tasks are social media resource building, process integration, and advertising promotion. When these three things occur with the right balance, you’ve baked what is likely to be a very delicious social media marketing cake.
