| Let’s agree on one key detail before we proceed any further – social media advertising is not the same thing as a good social media strategy. It is a component of it, just like a door is a component to a house. Social media advertising is simply running advertising campaigns on target social media resources to reach intended audiences. That’s it. It is not the same thing as engaging, brand-building, crowd-sourcing or any of the other catchphrases that industry folks like to throw around. That being said, there’s plenty of just plain ineffective social media advertising campaigns, just like there are plenty of just plain ineffective banner advertising campaigns.Ultimately, the former is a subset of the latter and they both share the necessity of strong targeting.Without this, you’re truly throwing your advertising dollars away. Social networks like Facebook do allow advertisers to create some interesting targeting options (age, gender, location, interest) compared to other sites and also in relatively low minimum buy amounts compared to other sites or ad networks. So make sure that if you are responsible for this on behalf of your brand, that you’re taking full advantage of the targeting capabilities and also following a proper testing process. If it’s a bit intimidating, we definitely recommend asking for help (from friendly folks like us) and ensure that you’re asking questions about targeting and testing.
